Right on. Thanks, I will ask him! My hands are full too...but all the sudden people keep asking about this damn squat. I have never done one, used one or taught one. But i might mess with it in the future...always up for a new challenge.

Nay. They feel akward as all hell. Barbell ends up dragging unpleasantly against my backside. Shoulders get all torqued. Maybe I'm doing them wrong, but I see no reason to bother with 'em. They don't seem to do anything that a front squat can't do for you.

Unless you plan on carrying a lot of stretchers from the front the movement looks too unnatural to seem safe. Pure speculation though, might be safe, might not be.

I did a program a number of years ago that had me put my heels on two plates (roughly 5" elevation) then sit down on my calves. It targets the front of your knees, especially those muscular nubs on either side of your kneecap.

I would be hard pressed to find a good justification to substitute those in favor of back, front, and overhead squats. I don't think they are dangerous done properly, but just aren't necessary.

Like Barry I did these a decade ago and found that elevating the heels was much more natural - Perhaps there would be justification if all you had was a heavy barbell and no racks.

Yeah I dunno. I've tried it a couple of times just because and it's really awkward. Plus I don't like the idea of my grip playing a factor in a squating movement...

For a similar effect, I prefer trap bar DLs. Not exactly the same, but will deliver a similar dose to the quads.
