Is quinoa paleo?

I'm sure it's been asked before but still confused on this topic. I know it comes from a plant. But also heard it's a grain? Any help would be great!

Re: Is quinoa paleo?

This is what Robb Wolf had to say back in 2003 when the question was asked.....

"Quinoa is technicly gluten free however it does contain a protein fraction which extracts in aqueous media that causes a positive Celiac reaction in susceptible individuals. Translation: it can still cause gut problems in many people. it is quite carb dense so anything over a 1/4 cup serving is going to pack a serious insulin response. It is very heavily weighted towards the n-6 fatty acids...the n-3's exist at pretty trivial levels. If i were foing to choose wheat vs quinoa the quinoa would win hands down but like all grain type items the hutritional density is pathetic compared to other paleo type items."

So, I'd say "no."

It's actually not a grain -- more of a seed -- but it falls into that group of non-grain-but-non-paleo foods that might cause other negative digestive health effects in some people...

Re: Is quinoa paleo?

If you eat it be sure it is well rinsed. The coating on the outside is what causes a lot of issues, and it will taste better too.

Re: Is quinoa paleo?

The question is not "Is this food paleo or not". THe question is "How am I likely to respond to this food" or "How do I respond to this food". Best way to find out, add it to your diet, see how you respond.

Re: Is quinoa paleo?

Thanks for the help...I'm going to treat it like a grain then.
