Re: Deep frying with coconut oil... ?

I buy coconut oil at wallyworld. I use it in our popcorn maker, makes the best popcorn. Never have used it for anything else but might have to try. It makes the popcorn so good I dont even use butter.

hrm. you should keep checking back, in any case. they frequently have good "special offers" that are usually buy one get one (or more) free.

Re: Deep frying with coconut oil... ?

so i've got a deep fryer, and i've got 2 buckets of coconut oil. however seeing as how i only spent $30 on the deep fryer, i'd like to try it out for the 1st time with some cheaper oil (dont wanna risk burning/ruining $40 worth of coconut oil). what would you guys consider to be less evil - hydrogenated lard or peanut oil?

BTW, i called 4 local butchers yesterday inquiring about LARD and a couple of them didn't even know what it was and none of them sold it. SIGH. nothing is ever easy.

Beef tallow has smoke point of about 420. It's the traditional fat for deep frying. Not sure how easy it will be for you to find.
