basic reads on prebiotics have listed inulin and foods containing it as useful in improving gut flora. my question is how well, if at all, this carries over to supplements, such as many fiber supps that are inulin based?

From what I understand, it carries over.

One caveat: the short- to medium-chain FOS are the most desirable (as in the Frutafit and SweetLeaf versions) and have not been found to feed undesirable bacteria.

There is debate as to whether or not the long-chain FOS can feed bad bugs like Klebsiella.
