Home made rings from PVC

I have been attempting to perfect my home made rings from 1"PVC. Here are my results so far.

I purchased 10' of 1" pvc from Lowes for $3. I cut 2 pieces at 21", packed them with sand, capped the ends with duct tape and heated for 10' @ 350 in the oven.

Experiment #1:
I used a 1 gallon paint can for the form but this left me with about 3/4 of a ring. It seems the duct tape acts like a splint and prevents bending.

Experiment #2
I used the inside of a 5 gallon bucket for a form. The bottom has a diameter of 10 1/2" so I lined the insider perimeter with scraps of 1x2 reducing the diameter to the desired 9". This method worked well but I still can't get a full ring. The duct tape on the end still acts as a splint so I had to remove 2 peices of 1x2 so as not to deform the PVC ends.


I don't think a full ring is neccesary, but how wide of a gap do I need to create between the ends so my forearms don't get rubbed by the PVC ends?

Has anyone created a full ring from the PVC?

I think I could use method #2 above to start the ring and finish it by emptying the sand and using a heat gun to form the ends. Has anyone used a standard heat gun on the PVC with success or failure?

John McEneany posted this link for marine purse rings in another thread the other day, check it out. I'm all for doing things myself to save money, but I think the pvc cooking/bending/forming thing is a bit much considering you can buy these for $15 each. Just my .02

Paul,

A while back (a year or so???) someone posted pics of homemade PVC rings and a description of how they made them.

If I recall, they filled the rings ups with sand and heated them in the oven then bent them around something like a coffee can.

Those marine rings just look too easy & nice to bother with baking PVC.

The full ring is unneccesary, i have about 3/4 rings.

Baking PVC is cheaper and only takes about 1/2 an hour. I paid $14 for the PVC and enough rough to make two sets.

When you're 18 and need to cut all the financial corners you can, every dollar counts:proud:

Anyway, if you're interested, here's a pretty easy fix:
1. Cut the length depending on circumfrence of whatever you're using to bend it (Circumfrence = 3.14xDiameter)
2. Wrap each on in aluminum foil
3. Bake for 10 minutes @ 350 degrees
4. Wrap around ________ and hold in place until pipe stays by itself
5. Run the rope through ring and fasted to whatever you want to them from

Experiment with the best way to hang them (I used two figure-8 knots) and for god's sake USE GLOVES when handling the hot pipes!

You can make a full ring easily - just cut the pvc long, so that it overlaps on the ends when wrapping it around the mould. It will form a spiral. Then cut the ends so that the barely touch each other, and use a PVC coupler to join the ends with glue.

I personally did NOT close mine at the top, so I could pass a chain through them and use THAT to suspend the rings - so if the PVC fails, I am still hanging on to 5000lb-test chain when upside-down :-)

For the really lazy, just cut two pvc about 6-8 inches long and tie it off on a rope. Form a triangle shape.
I've had homemade ones like this for years!

My pvc rings are open on the top, and I have the webbing run through the inside of the ring and tied off in the gap. Totally solid now after a year and a half, cheap and easy to do. I just followed the instructions in the FAQ verbatim.
