Newbie Zone Q- do you buy food that conforms to the blks or conform the blks to food?

For example, in "Mastering the Zone" it says that 1/2 cup of yogurt should give you 1 block of protein and 1 block of carbs. I look at the label of the yogurt that I buy, and I find that 1 cup would give me 2.8 blocks of carbs and .9 block of protein.

So, if you're on the zone, should you count the blocks based on what it says on the back of the nutrition label rather than going by the book and then form your own blocks out of them? Or should you try to buy foods that conform to the book's calculations for blocks?

I'm a newb too.... and found from practice and advice here, that reading labels is a must. The Zone pubs really can only be so accurate, they can't list every brand of every product. Protein powder is another good example. If your yogurt isn't 1 and 1, then don't use it 1 and 1.

But what do I know, I work for the gov't.

Thanks, it is kind of a dumb question, but just thought I'd double check

Bob, you are assuming too much, you might be both dumb.

Seriously though, I do the same. I get my rough estimates from the block list (CFJ) but I check the labels and correct accordingly. Try not to obsess about the "hidden blocks", i.e. how much protein you are getting within the carb blocks or vice versa (combos like yogurt and milk excluded). Stick to the main nutrient.
