Knees in on deadlift

Doing today's workout of 7x1 deadlift, I noticed that as I approached my max (185, 190, 195, and 200F, new PR by 10 pounds!), almost immediately my knees started "collapsing" inward. Is this a common fault? Is it just part of getting to max loads? Is there something I can/should be doing to try to correct it? Yeah, so many questions ...

Thanks!

Re: Knees in on deadlift

Congrats on the PR Amy.

Yes, collapsing is very common on heavy pulls as well as squats. It should be worked on. The first thing is to be aware of this, and fight it. Press the knees apart and think about driving the floor apart underneath you. (Be sure to make sure that the femur is in line with the foot and low back arched).

Aside from that, work on the posterior chain. Get the glutes involved in the movement more, and their usually is less compensatory knee knocking. So GHD, weighted step ups (high), lunges etc.

Re: Knees in on deadlift

knees collapsing in, like on the squat, probably means weak adductors. if your knees are collapsing in on the DL and your lumbar spine is staying lordotic, then that's your weak link...what are your squat numbers like?

Re: Knees in on deadlift

Let's see ... last CFT my squat was 165. Front squat a few weeks ago was 140, but without going low enough. I must add that while I have been CFing for about 18 months, I haven't been serious about it until mid November. Don't know if that matters, but I figure I might as well throw that out there.

I'm not 100% sure my back isn't rounding. I'll have to ask someone the next time I do them.

My last CFT was 435, and I'd like to get up to 525 by the end of the year. By the way I'm 5'3" and weigh 123.

Thanks for the help!
