What do you think of this pullup workout?

A guy at work suggested this workout:

For 1 hour do 2 dead hang pullups every 15 seconds, alternating grip each time. So basically it goes like this:

Do 2 pullups, rest 15 seconds, then do 2 pullups with a different grip/different pullup variations, rest 15 seconds, etc.

I've done this 3 times over the last 3 weeks, can't say I've seen any major results (was very sore the next day after the first time).

100 for time.
Weighted Pull-Ups in weightlifting schemes (3x3, 5x5, 1RM)
5x10 Strict with different Grips.

These will greatly improve pull-up performance and take way less than an hour....that is just a complete waste of time. (in regards to it taking an hour, you can get equal or more out of improving your pull-ups in less time) But if you are just looking to aimlessly waste time throughout the day, go for it.

480 pullups in an hour is just silly. No wonder you were sore and haven't made any progress. Sore =/= good workout.

That's crazy. You could make more progress doing 3 sets of your max pullups until you get to about 15 then starting with weighted ones.

Why are even listening to some "guy" at work? I'm more amazed that you thought that workout was a good idea.

Once you get to 15, alternate
3 x max reps
with
3 x 5 weighted

as per Mark Rippetoe's recommendation.

Re: What do you think of this pullup workout?

Just out of curiousity... what exactly is your goal? I'm just a little puzzled at the reasoning. If your goal is to improve upon pull ups, I agree with the prescribed responses on here. Varying sets, reps, days, rests, and weight ~ will all have an effect on your overall strength and stamina in a specific movement. However, the proper answer really depends on the question. Please clarify what it is you're looking to do.

Find your weaknesses and focus on them.

Re: What do you think of this pullup workout?

I like the Death by Pullup workout from the pdf floating around here. Might not be the best thing for improving pullups, but it's lots of fun.

1 pullup first min
2 second min
3 third min
continue until you cannot complete the number required for that min.

Easy until 12 or 15, 15 to 18 was complete torture, and didn't even try to start min 19.

Re: What do you think of this pullup workout?

When I said "a guy at work" I should've been more specific- he's a judo coach that has trained guys that have gone on to become national champions (at a junior competition a few weeks ago, his guys took 6 golds). My goals are to gain muscle mass, improve strength and improve aesthetics (I know some may smirk at the last one, but whatever).

I'm not using this to replace my normal CF regimen, just to try something different and see what happens.
