Cool, a conclusion. Sex. good. always. Lock the thread before someone posts something to the contrary and ruins my life.

Re: abstinence and athletic performance

Post anything you want to the contrary and I'm not changing my position (ahem) on the abstinence and workout thing.
I was celibate for a freaking year...and I was EVIL. EVIL I tell you. Lots of reasons for the celibacy that we won't go into but anyone who willingly does that to him/herself is more than a couple of screws loose. Ick. Being generally bad tempered and more than a little edgy is NOT how I want to live life.

Re: abstinence and athletic performance

Honestly i think potentially this subject matter icky and amusing as it is could have vast impact on performance.

Give that -

A - sex hormones ie testosterone are known performance enhancers.

B - reproduction is a integral part of our DNA.

Heard a good quote in another article "Spit in the face of mother nature and there are usually dire consequences".

Having said all that i doubt ill really be pursing "Elite performance" if it came out as advice which was along the lines of "go 5 years without before athletically peaking"

Arnold said something to the effect of "the two best things you can do to get in shape are pumping and humping". I like this philosophy.

Re: abstinence and athletic performance

Unfortunatly I cant find the link to this but a study done in the UK showed the complete opposite of this link. On a group of football players the abstinant players performed far below par than what the sexually active ones did.

I even remember something about one test had a group take their half time as normal, and another group perform sexual activities with their partners on the half time. The group who performed sexually and came back out to play out performed and beat the non active team.

Plus i imagine the active group got to run around with big smiles for the second half. hahaha.

Any way, Im no scientist but thats the study i saw.

Re: abstinence and athletic performance

rickson gracie in his movie "choke" said he went weeks with out sex before fights and compared himself to a race horse. basically, saying after the horse has gotten some they don't "compete" with the same furry as before. you can see his wife in the background just shaking her head, pretty funny.

Re: abstinence and athletic performance

so, what about the idea of getting plenty but just holding back your "wod", and only releasing once a week?

This way you get the benefit of increased testosterone from sexual activity, and maximize the levels by not reaching a climax.

This is actually quite similar to Chinese Taoist philosophy on this issue:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taoist_sexual_practices (contains sexual images and references, see esp. "Male control of ejaculation").
