What to use for self massage?

Which piece of equipment do you use for self massage? Why do you consider it the best option? Does the part of the body to be massaged determine which piece of equipment to use?
  • Foam roller (which diameter?)
  • Sticks
  • Tennis ball
  • Larger balls (5-7")
  • Other
Thanks in advance

Re: What to use for self massage?

6 in x 3 ft foam roller - A great investment that is extremely versatile. It kills you the first week (in a good way), but then your tissue adapts and it becomes a more comfortable massage tool. Highly recommended. I bought mine at Dick's Sporting Goods for about $30. It also came with a short DVD by Mark Verstegen. If you want an instructional DVD I believe Perform Better also sells a roller set with a higly praised DVD by Mike Boyle.

Tennis Ball - Great for the arches.

All of the above. Any one will work for any part, but some work better for certain parts. My personal favorites - foam roller, the stick, and a baseball/softball.

Re: What to use for self massage?

These are the dogs b***s for self massage (WFS)

I got the whole kit. They give an instructional DVD too. I get sore lower back from playing field hockey and sometimes lifting and just lying on the ground with the ball under me slightly moving it around in the pain area for about 5 mins always takes the pain away. Like magic. The rollers are also great for your legs esp the ITBs.

They get my vote.

Best of luck!

I love my foam roller. I have the one from Dick's. I also use a racquetball. A wife is good too!

p.s. I like the rational/real avatar! I'm a math geek.

Re: What to use for self massage?

I have my 7 yo son walk up and down my back. Come to think of it all 3 of my kids get a kick out of it and it feels great! The problem is sometime my son thinks its funny just to fall and I get a quick spinal "adjustment" for free!

Re: What to use for self massage?

Recently had some stiff neck issues. Saw the physio and she pulled out the tennis ball too. She showed me the key to working out the back and the neck. fold up a bed sheet lenghtways until it is about 6" wide. Sit on one end and drape it over a shoulder placing the ball where ever you need it. Pull hard with one or both hands and you are working the muscle.

All you have to do is keep switching sides and ball placement to cover what you need.

Cmbine that with light and heavy pressure and turning you head different directions- your neck will be cured.
