Breath and Proper Breathing Technique

I have been listening to a lot of podcasts lately and I keep hearing stuff about "breathing." I really never put much thought into it but now I realize that this has been a terrible mistake. If nothing else, I have started to use breath exercises at home to improve stress reduction and concentration. I have started with "box breathing" and it seems to work and is actually very difficult as you progress.

So, I'm wondering if there is a proper way to breathe during workouts. I would say that endurance is definitely a weak point for me and I'm wondering if this is something I could improve by working on proper breathing rather than just more training. I may get through a WOD faster than the guy next to me but I always feel like everyone else's breathing is more controlled and relaxed while I'm huffing.

Thought this was a topic that is not often discussed?

Urrrrr ... yes through your nose or mouth

I think the most important thing is your timing to breath during movements. Breath in or out at the wrong time and you loose everything.

I have had to teach my wife how important it is to get this right over the past 2 years and she now seems to have this off to a tee.

i'll assume this isn't some trolling remark but a genuine questions

i actually struggle with this a little especially when running as my pace and my breathing are usually out of sync and so i get breathless and 'forget' to breath...hard to explain.

but i come from a background of competitive swimming and in swimming (especially over 100m lengths) your breathing sync-ing with your stroke is really important.

so yes, there is a 'correct' way of breathing, but that's the limit of my knowledge on this subject i'm afraid.

Kettle bell swings are an easy example.

Try breathing in when swinging up and out when swinging down.

Then reverse it.

Which one seems to flow better? Imagine that x50 reps and suddenly how you breathe and when matters.

Likewise when doing big movements (squat/ohs/etc) learning how to hold your breath and having that solid core plays a huge role in bigger numbers.

Practicing when to breathe during different movements just helps you be more prepared when you are fatigued from a workout.
