Front Squat vs. Back Squat

I have a very ad-hoc squat rack set up, structurally sound, but as it is, I can only do front squats off of it, no back squats. I have made a lot of progress on front squats, I recently broke a body weight squat for 5, and can now do pistols with both legs. My question though, will anything detrimental ensue from training my front squat and leaving my back squat rather neglected?

Re: Front Squat vs. Back Squat

Front squat tends to hit the quads and glutes (if you're doing it oly lifter style) while back squat tends to hit posterior chain, hams and glutes, if your weight is on your heels which Coach Rip recommends in SS. Generally, the answer is probably no, but what's keeping you from doing 1 BS every time you do 2-3 FS? Even oly lifters train back squat as well along with their front squats.

Re: Front Squat vs. Back Squat

I spent a year doing only front squats. I see no obvious problems with it. You will develop quads more as Steven says. Extra work for posterior chain might be advisable. Pulls and deadlift variations. I did neither. It took me a couple of weeks getting back into a good back squat after that but it wasn't that bad.

wooooooo! isaac's first post!

steven, he can't take the bar out of the "squat rack" in a back squat. it's essentially the uprights for a bench, so only way to pick it up is in a front squat.

Re: Front Squat vs. Back Squat

Ah, well there you go.

You can always load up enough weight to which you can jerk and then do like 20 rep back squats, lol.
