One of my friends was morbidly obese (the doctors weren't sure how he was even still alive), and had a bariatric surgery. It saved his life, but he has stomach and digestive issues for the rest of his life. Not to mention the cocktail of meds I'm guessing he still has to take. If a tapeworm could have the same, or close to the same, effectiveness as surgery I think it should be studied a little further and not dismissed because it sounds gross and unconventional. Using leeches for medicinal purposes is equally gross, but effective.

If the tapeworm diet shows promise, is it not possible to develop a tapeworm that has some of the negatives removed and increases some of the positives?
