sprite zero and crystal light seem to be the only drinks thatactually curb my sugar cravings and prevent me from eating between meals. Any dangers in these drinks?

I hate to rain on your refreshment but unfortunately Crystal Light and Sprite Zero both contains artificial sweeteners (Aspartame and Acesulfame Potassium). Crystal Light also contains artificial colors.

This will get you started on the dangers of aspartame: http://www.sweetpoison.com/ (W/F/S)

Acesulfame K and other sweeteners can be covered here: http://www.sweetpoison.com/aspartame...tml#Acesulfame (W/F/S)

Here's a decent summary of some of the effects of most food dyes and a list of some that have already been banned and why: http://diet-studies.com/dyesinfood.html (W/F/S)

I try to limit myself to drinks that contain Stevia or Cane Juice/other natural sugars. Even then it is best to avoid the sugary drinks. It seems like more and more we are finding out that if it's not natural, it's bad for us.

Hope this helps.

I'm a crystal light fan too Gina. Although I drink it very diluted, like Jason said, if it isn't natural it's probably not doing our bodies any good. (Thanks for the info Jason!) I guess it's time to find a better alternative...but I'm sure it will be worth it. :-)

As a note, "natural" can be just as bad as artificial.

If you need a sweet fix maybe make your own using stevia or even splenda, aspartame is the last thing I would put in my body.

Best thing would be to let your taste receptors recover their sensitivity so even fruit tastes super sweet.

I know people will not be into splenda but off all the synthetic sweeteners it is the only one I was unable to find dirt on on pubmed. If you have any hard scientific evidence against splenda please post.

I don't have any hard scientific evidence. The extent of my knowledge is that sucralose is qualified as a non-nutritive sweetener because of the claim it does not get broken down by the body. Unfortunately, it does break down and they aren't sure fully what it breaks down into and how those chemicals effect the body. The substance is still in its testing infancy. I have splenda containing foods occasionaly but only when I have no better options.

Thanks! The quote is from Frank Herbet's novel Dune. One of my favorite books of all time.
