Staying asleep. I can fall asleep pretty quick and easy. I end up waking up 5,6,7 times a night.

Last night I actually slept 6 straight hours (first time in about 2 weeks.)

3 things it could have been:

1)ZMA is actually building up in my blood stream.

2)Dinner was very high in fat, but I don't know how much this helped- it was probably about 3 hours before bed.

3)I've taken about 4 days off from any heavy lifting, maybe my CNS was just hating me.

I'll see how tonight goes and report back.

Good call Sarena on the Lights Out book.
Charles, sounds like you're on the right track. Please keep updating. How much ZMA are you taking?

I'm probably taking a bit more than I should. Taking in 100mg of Zinc (as Zinc Gluconate) and 1000mg of Magnesium (as Magnesium Oxide.) Please feel free to tell me if I'm eating garbage.

Re: Why can't I sleep?

Charles,

i've been being treated for insomnia for the past 8 months (triggered by brain trauma from an explosion) i know that has nothing to do with your case but I have been to countless doctors, sleep studies and researched/tried just about everything in this thread. I know how frustrating it can be not to get sleep and know all about the stress that comes along with it. I recently attended a sleep study and sleep seminar and talked alot of people that benifited from them. I, on the other hand, can only sleep if im medicated. My reccomend asking a doc but avoid medication if possible, there are always side effects.

Re: Why can't I sleep?

Charles, If you have access to good medical (meaning comprehensive) have a sleep study done. It may be physiological. The Navy did one for me which was very informative.

Re: Why can't I sleep?

I've got a VA appointment on the 6th of October. After we get my disability sorted, hopefully I can figure out the sleep thing.

Honestly I'm hoping that I can resolve it before then. Last night was much better, going to try and do better tonight.

Re: Why can't I sleep?

oh i had misunderstood. i thought you couldnt get to sleep.but after skimming over it again i see you cant STAY asleep. im going to follow this thread more closely now because i do the same thing as you. i wake up about every hour all night long, and at 5:50'ish every morning whether im working out not and no matter what time i go to sleep. very, very irritating and i have no idea why. i even put up black curtains everywhere in my room to make sure there is no light. mabye its feng shui thing. they say if there is any reflecive surface in the room that your soul can see when it sits up to leave it wont and you dont get proper rest. pictures of water cause turbulence, window should be to the right of your bed etc...

Magnesium oxide never worked for me. The only forms I've seen recommended are citrate and aspartate.
As for dosage, the ZMA formula has 10 mg zinc, 150 mg magnesium, 3.5 mg vitamin B6 per capsule. I take at least 4 caps a night (600 mg magnesium) and I'm small and female. I'd say take a little less zinc to keep the above ratio (1:15, you're taking 1:10). Your bowels will tell you if you've taken too much mg. But do get magnesium citrate. Also, do not take it too close to a meal containing dairy as mg and calcium compete for absorption (and calcium wins).
Any reason for taking them separately? I'm just curious. ZMA is pretty cheap.

I had mg on hand already. Once these are gone, I'll be moving to ZMA.

Sleep has dramatically improved over the last several days. It has to either be from zing and magnesium or from letting my CNS deload, probably a combination.
