WHOA!!! Underage Gymnast Breaking News

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,407803,00.html (WFS)

That possibly means.....

US Team Gold
Uneven Bars Gold for Nastia

Kind of a shame since China has done a fabulous job hosting so far. What an arrogant chance to take when they probably had a 16 year old gymnast who was nearly as good in reserve.

Yeah, but how would like to be given the gold because it turned out that it was a little kid that beat you?

Re: WHOA!!! Underage Gymnast Breaking News

They should allow 14 year olds to compete imo. If you let them compete at other levels completing the same moves... why not at the highest level? It was a silly rule change to move it to 16.

Re: WHOA!!! Underage Gymnast Breaking News

I don't think the limit is so much a matter of competitive edge (though it might be- female gymnasts may peak earlier for different reasons), but one of preventing what is essentially child abuse. When overactive parents/governments want to make a statement with someone who seems to be a genetic winner, they risk 'blowout,' wrecking a youth's career for a moment of glory. At least, that's the reason as I've heard it explained.

I agree...

And I would sure hate to win simply because an age rule was violated.

But then again, it was a rule, and they violated it....

I say let her keep the medal and ban China from womens gymnastics in 2012..

The rule also gives some gymnasts less of a chance to compete in multiple olympics. Shawn Johnson is lucky in that she's 16 and 20 in olympic years, whereas someone like Nastia would be 14, 18, and 22, possibly restricting her to one trip to the games.

Re: WHOA!!! Underage Gymnast Breaking News

Rules are rules. Why should the kid who competed and won illegally and at the expense of other competitors who played by the rules get to keep her award? It doesn't matter that it was the state who orchestrated the deception and she was just a pawn -- if a country was secretly doping an athlete, we would expect that athlete to be barred from competition regardless of if the athlete knew he or she was being given performance-enhancing drugs.

Younger performers are valuable in women's gymnastics for a number of reasons. As a gymnast gets older, she generally becomes less flexible, her all-important center of gravity is thrown off by the growth of boobs and butt, and she becomes less fearless (of both the scary routines she is doing and of the sheer gravity and importance of something like the Olympics). It is not the same as men's gymnastics which places a much greater premium on strength and men continue to get stronger as they get older.

But, none of this matters. The IOC is just placating the masses. Once the Olympics are over the world is going to forget all about the underage gymnasts and the IOC will quietly report that they found no reason to believe anyone on the Chinese team is underage.

And to be fair, Nastia won it anyways... Just because the Aussie judge doesn't know how to judge properly isnt her fault
