Crossfit with a Hip Replacement

I am six months out from a right total hip arthroplasty. I had the direct anterior approach. Smith & Nephew Oxinium implants. Went great. Was back at work a week after the surgery.

Before and after my hip replacement, I searched for stories of people training after a hip replacement; there weren't many that moved past the initial return to the gym.

I plan to document my experiences with Crossfit here. Ideally, it will serve as evidence you can train successfully after a hip replacement, and, at worst, it may be a cautionary tale.

I started pullups, and dips 10 days after surgery. BW squats a month after surgery. I squatted 225x8 five months out.

Started a Crossfit Fundamentals class yesterday. I will sub rowing for running and probably stepups for box jumps as I progress.

Rowed, went over squats, deadlifts, and presses (strict, push, and jerk) with PVC. Did a 7 minute AMRAP of 7 pushups, 7 situps, 7 squats.

Good stretching session afterwards.

I felt situps in the hip flexors and still do today.

Second class tomorrow.

Re: Crossfit with a Hip Replacement

Had a fun second session today. My superfit 14 yo son is training with me. He will rocket past me as soon as we finish Fundamentals.

We jumped rope to warm up. Hip felt fine.

Revisited deadlifts and the press series with PVC.

Moved in to medicine ball cleans.

Did deadlifts 4x175...I can deadlift substantially more but I'm not in a rush.

Finished with 5 rounds of 10 MB Cleans, 10 Push Press (light) and 5 Burpees.

Took me 7 minutes...my conditioning is poor at this point. Fortunately, it should improve a bit each workout. Son finished in 4:40.

Finished with stretching and cool down

Three more Fundamentals sessions, and we will join regular classes.

Re: Crossfit with a Hip Replacement

Trained by myself.

Pyramid'd pullups and dips (+45lb) to 8 reps and back down.

Worked on burpee form....mobility in right hip needs work. Bodyfat reduction will help as well.

Re: Crossfit with a Hip Replacement

Rowed 500m to warm-up. Stretched. Went through Presses with PVC.

5x5 MB squat clean, 3x3 pullup warm-up.

5 rounds of
10 MB squat clean
8 ring pushups
7 situps
5 pullups (last two rounds were not strict)

Some upper inner quad tightness. Very deconditioned.

If you read this and need a hip replacement, do not wait until you cannot train to have it done.

My initial plan was that I would do it when I couldn't train bjj or kickbox anymore...

When that happened, I decided I would wait until I couldn't squat and deadlift.

Eventually, I realized I would probably always be able to squat and deadlift...the weight forced the hip through a range of motion I couldn't push through without weight. When I admitted to myself my form had become dangerously compromised, I stopped.

Then I did nothing for nine months.

Had I had the surgery a year earlier...maybe even two...real recovery (getting back to training) would have been much easier, I suspect.
