I noticed the same thing with CrossFit. I use crossfit for our unit PT as well. In order to make sure that all my guys and myself were good to go for the fitness test I would do tabata push ups and sit ups quite often, also other drills, like 1 minute max effort, rest 1, 45 secs, rest 45, 30 secs, rest 30, 15 secs.

You could also try using this program http://hundredpushups.com/ (W/FS)
Thanks for turning me on to that program!!!

Re: Push-up Question

Stew Smith also has a pretty good push-up / abs workout that goes together. You perform the sets below, alternating a push up and an abs exercise. 10 rounds takes about 20 minutes and gives you 300 push ups and 210 abs. You can double it in under an hour if you feel ambitious.

10 triceps push ups
7 crunches
10 wide push ups
7 reverse crunches
10 regular push ups
7 half sit ups

Also, I'm doing GTG sets throughout the day. 6-10 sets of 30-60% of your max is the RXed amount to improve your numbers. Important thing is avoiding muscle failure. I've recently started doing core workouts and that has helped my push ups a lot, also.

This is the only thing I've seen suffer from doing crossfit. Everything else has increased from my weightlifting days. I could probably do more push-ups now stamina-wise but can't even touch what I was benching then...and I was never very bench focused. 1 x per week or so.

I also wanted to mention though that ring pushups/flies are a pretty wicked addition to your normal pushups.
