Not a Texas Squat?

Opinions. Does he lack hip development since this is not a Starting Strength textbook squat? He looks like Tom Platz doing squats and they both have legendary leg strength. Am I missing something with the low bar concept and raising the hips first? Texas vs Platz/Pisarenko.

Re: Not a Texas Squat?

It's not a low-bar squat. Since he's doing a very deep squat with more than 400 pounds, he probably has pretty strong hips. You can get very strong doing high-bar or low-bar squats, the low-bar position just engages more hip and hamstring in the movement, so you can lift more weight with it overall.

Re: Not a Texas Squat?

I' m not sure what a "Texas" squat is, especially since I live in Texas, and coach the squat to look like what Pisarenko is doing, as do the other weightlifting coaches that I know of in Texas.

And I doubt that Pisarenko lacked hip strength, since he at one time held the world record in the clean and jerk at I believe 581lbs, and he claims to have cleaned over 600lbs in training.

Yeah, 265kg. I wouldn't say Pisarenko was weak in the anything.

But that's a high bar, narrow stance squat. I'm also guessing it's significantly above 420 as the plates would suggest. Possibly around 630 if the two lighter-colored innermost plates are 100 pounders.
