After kipping for the first time I noticed a quick and sharp pain in my rear deltoids. The sensation is more pronounced on the right side. It is also only noticeable coming down.

The pain was not present during regular pull ups. The kipping was done under the supervision of Crossfit trainers.

I know that I have extremely tight shoulders and believe that this is the culprit. Any suggestions or advice?

Stretch your shoulders and rest until the pain goes away. Could be any number of problems since the shoulder is a complex joint. Would need more info (previous training background and such) to take a guess at a diagnosis.

chad, i am having a similar issue with my shoulder as well. also started while doing kipping pull-ups under supervision of a trainer. mine however was not a quick or sharp pain, but i too feel fine doing a regular strict pull-up. my trainer has advised me to ice it along with some rotator cuff exercises, which seems to be helping. How long have you had this pain? Is it constant or just aggravated when you do kipping pull-ups?
