i've always had joints that "popped" or "cracked" a lot. my knees and ankles in particular, they crack so loudly in fact, that i could wake my mother up just by walking across the floor at night, my feet and ankles popping would wake her. just the last few days, my shoulders began popping (seemed to notice it after some heavy should-centric workouts. they just pop randomly when i move an arm for something. it doesn't hurt, it actually feels kind of good, like cracking a knuckle, however, i want to know if its doing any joint damage or anything. losing functionality of a shoulder (or knee, or ankle, or anything) scares me to death, and could end my career. so, are popping joints something that should be checked out by a doctor?

The medical term for the phenomena you are experiencing is Crepitus. There are more than one reasons why you may be experiencing this but judging from your post I would say it is simply gas collecting in and being forced out of spaces in your soft tissues. Not to worry.

If it doesn't hurt, it's likely not an issue yet.

I find that everyone's joints start cracking much less when the nightshades are removed from the diet. Thus, I would guess that excessive joint popping/cracking may be a sign of arthritis developing.

If you don't know what the nightshades are, search this board or go to w/f safe.

All that being said, my joints do crack, especially my knees. They start cracking a ton more than usual after I eat nightshades or gluten, so I feel there is a connection between crepitus and inflammation.
