Elbow pain with effusion

So at the doctor today, I mentioned that my left elbow is constantly sore with sharp pains fully extended or retracted.

She poked my elbow and I nearly jumped off the table. Apparently the swelling was more obvious than I thought.

History is dislocation in 1996, arthroscopic surgery in 2001 and 2007 to remove foreign bodies (bone chips) and arthritis.

Anyway, I am 33. I have been at CrossFit for about 3 months now. I can't remember my elbow not hurting in the past few years but apparently the effusion is a pass to the Orthopedic Surgeon.

Anyone have any experience with excess fluid in the elbow? Dislocations?

Re: Elbow pain with effusion

When you dislocate your elbow you can do some damage to the joint surface. It looks like the swelling is most likely related to arthritis that was already seen in the arthroscopy. Arthritis occurs she you lose the soft cushion of the joint and have bone rubbing.

So, should I just be put out to pasture?

I am in complete agreement with you. 1996, 2001, 2006, 2012 -- anyone else see a pattern emerging? It seems that it takes 5 years or so for the arthritis to get out of control. I am worried what the Xray will show.

Is it possible to reverse arthritis?

Unfortunately no, the NIH is working on that. You do want to limit the side effects of it though. That means maintaining and trying to improve your range of motion as arthritis will try to stiffen up your joint.

Re: Elbow pain with effusion

How far into the pain cave should I go stretching it? Since starting CrossFit I seem to have broken loose a few extra degrees. I am following the K-Star methods of stretching the elbow. I push it as far as I can without passing out and try to hold it for 2 minutes. It is getting easier and less painful. I will just keep at it and see what the (first) surgeon I go to says.

This is the Xray of the original injury for anyone curious. The first doctor said 6 months off, the third let me back after 2 games. Even dealing with it now, I still do not regret that decision.

Sorry, the xray usually comes out at the end of a long "glory days" story.

Good old high school American Football.

Re: Elbow pain with effusion

Any update? I had severe elbow pain from a past injury, and cleared it up using the Voodoo Bands from Rogue Fitness.

Not sure if it work work for you though.

I basically broke down the scar tissue, increased blood flow/circulation, and increased my ROM.

Re: Elbow pain with effusion

I am quite interested in the Voodoo bands - at the very least they won't make it worse.

I will have the MRI on Monday, My Voodoo bands should be here Tuesday.

Did you just use mobility WOD? Do you have any secrets?
