Paleo early morning pre-WOD food recommendations?

The last 2 days I've been doing my WOD's at 5am due to scheduling challenges. I've gotten up at 4:15 to eat because I can't workout at this level without something in my stomach. I see a couple of similar post but I'm looking for recommendations on pre-WOD food. I've tried fruit, nuts, eggs and roast beef in small quantities. I seemed ok during the WOD but wanted to know if anyone had suggestions on food and the timing of eating the food pre-WOD. I've thought about the Casein shake before bed which I use to do before Paleo and I didn't seem that hungry when waking up at the normal time of 6am. Also, how much water intake before the WOD that early? During a normal day I am up over 100oz based on the CF hydration video. Thanks!

Hey there! What I do before my occasional morning WOD is I eat 4 oz of meat(aka 4 zone blocks) and half an avocado. I eat about an hour before.

Hope that helps.

I always eat 4oz of unsweet applesauce with a Tablespoon of unsweet protein powder mixed in at 6am (about 45 mins before workout). Works great!

Smoothie with almond milk and frozen berries. Can also mix in flax seed, nuts, OJ, protein powder. I do a 6 am workout and drink it on the way in. Specifically here's how I make it:

6 oz almond milk
6-8oz frozen berries
2 tsp flax seed
2 oz OJ
scoop of vanilla protein

sometimes I'll add 1/4 cup sliced almonds.

Re: Paleo early morning pre-WOD food recommendations?

I used to get up super early to eat before I practiced saxophone or worked out (depending on the day), but eating breakfast at 4 or 5 just seemed so wrong to me, haha. I know this isn't what you are asking, but you might want to consider some sort of "fast." I never thought I'd survive without breakfast, but I have been doing some sort of daily fast since January now and I feel great. I get up at 5:30 most mornings, practice 3-3.5 hours (which takes more energy than you guys might expect), then workout (on my w/o days). So I don't eat my first meal until 11 or later. (I eat very close to paleo, too)

So I know you say you don't want to workout without a bit of food before, but in my experience its worth trying to do it without pre-wo food. Just a thought! IF has definitely saved me a lot of time, and I still eat the same amount of calories as I normally would, just in a shorter time frame (which means a post workout FEAST...mmmm).

Re: Paleo early morning pre-WOD food recommendations?

Cup of berries rasp, black and blue mixed with a handful of walnuts and 4 oz of meat or 4 eggs is my fave. An hour or 2 before I work out. Mix it up though...What are you worried about? Performance? passing out? Get used to eating right before. Or an hour before. And not eating at all!

Re: Paleo early morning pre-WOD food recommendations?

Must admit - I am a huge breakfast fan and I do not seem to need anything pre-WOD 6am - just need to wake about an hour before the WOD and have a cup of coffee.

I was going to post a similar question but more related to post WOD. Not to hyjack but if anyone can throw out what a good post WOD recovery / breakfast would be - that would be terrific.

Re: Paleo early morning pre-WOD food recommendations?

+1 on the intermittent fasting.
I have found I am actually stronger after a 12-15 hour fast (measured by my 5RM deadlift and 3RM snatch).

Apparently fasting also boosts your HGH and testosterone levels, so worth a shot. Not to mention it is really practical to just get up and go!
