What are the Olympic lifters sniffing before they lift?

Brad, sounds like ammonia caps, like the ones in first aid kits, I used them sometimes when I was powerlifting.

I had a crazy chemistry teacher who enjoyed getting kids to sniff 100% pure ammonia. I've seen some tough kids brought to tears from that bottle.

Beth, it is a psyching up thing, the ammonia clears your head and lights a fire under your butt like a slap in the face.

It hurts like hell and it kills brain cells like St. Patty's Day in Chico, CA.

I always assumed it was so strong (and sharply, offensively pungent) that it provoked an adrenaline response (like the slap in the face mentioned above).

Ah right...

Like competing at the Olympics doesn't provoke adrenaline.

It would seem to be a bit redundant, wouldn't it?
