Gloves.

What is the rationale for using or not using lifting gloves?

Re: Gloves.

make my hands sweat and are uncomfortable. not to mention my grip is much more solid without gloves, there's no material to shift. that is why i don't use them.

Re: Gloves.

I'm not lifting extreme weight, but I don't like gloves. Same reasons as Michael. Of course, After years of rowing and working in restaurants, I have pretty tough skin on my hands.

Re: Gloves.

I hate "workout gloves" because they have a huge amount of padding in the palm and fingers that really messes with my grip. I will wear thin gardening or baseball gloves if I'm deadlifting at a globo because they don't like chalk and my palms get sweaty so my grip is horrible. I tend to only wear gloves on things I need dry palms for though. If my grip isn't going to fail I'll take em off.

Re: Gloves.

If you need hand protection, use grips.

Re: Gloves.

My girlfriend wears gloves if she's lifting, because she gets in trouble if she goes home and has callouses on her hands. I believe that Rip said that he doesn't mind lifting gloves, as long as they match your purse. This works well for my girlfriend as she owns many purses of many colours.

Under no other circumstances do I want to see a glove on anybody, not even a maxillofacial surgeon or a church organist. Not even a lawyer. Gloves add a layer of unstable material between the bar and the hand, destabilize the grip, prevent necessary callus formation, and actually make
gripping harder due to the effective increase in diameter of the bar being held. Fat bars are used for this reason to work the grip, but gloves are not. Gloves are annoying. Inexperienced, non-serious people think they are supposed to wear them because they see them in the fitness magazines. Cindy Crawford wears them. Richard Simmons wears them. Iím sorry, I just canít talk about this anymore.

The whole article is a good read, as with much of the Journal. Its only 25$, I've spent more of a 1/4 tank of gas.

That's right. Chinese parents don't expect their daughter to ever lift anything heavy, because it will make her less feminine. That's just how it is.

Re: Gloves.

I guess that means this girl's parents didn't seem to mind.
