If you want to clean or snatch any appreciable amount of weight, yes. There's no easy fix, you've just gotta tough it out and build up a tolerance for it.

In my case I place the ring finger on the gap in the knurling (for snatch grip), then rotate the hand around the ring finger to bring the other fingers in contact. If I engage the hook grip first, the last two fingers sort of dangle and there's much more pressure on the grip.

It doesn't matter as much for clean/deadlift grip because the angle of the arms is different, but it still makes a difference at heavier weights.

Now that I think about it when I tried um hooking last night, by focusing my squeeze so much on the fingers wrapping on my thumb, my pinky and ring were proably too relaxed which then let more of the weight sit on the thumb as opposed to the whole hand. Thanks.

If your thumb is really too short, you can always grow out your thumbnail a little bit and tape the thumbnail. Or you can wrap the thumb with cloth.
