5k run

Is this supposed to be a maximum effort time-trial or just a fast-paced run?

I think you're over thinking this Michael. Just do the darn run as fast as you can.

If the wod says "for time," or even if it doesn't say it then it's implied , it's as fast as you can; so yes, max effort.

Remember that it is as much a test as a workout. If you don't go all out each time then comparisons to previous 5k time don't mean a lot.
