20 Rep Squats - My (ugly) 315x20 inside

I've been talking a lot about 20RM squats lately. Too much talk, not enough action, if you ask me. I've also been a complete slacker for the past couple weeks. A drunk, fat, slacker. So I punished myself this morning and went for a PR that I've always wanted to hit, but have been afraid to conquer - 315x20.

What can YOU 20RM Squat? Have you tried it before? If not, make sure to read Rip's take on it first: http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/63_07_Be_Alive.pdf (WFS). In particular, I enjoy this quote:
Quote:
The challenge is doing
it when you feel like you are about to die, when things
other than making the bar go up would logically seem
more important. If you have never done a set of twenty
with a weight that you previously thought was a 10-rep
max, you should try it sometime.
Here's the vid of my attempt this morning. Warning: It's ugly. My form is not particularly good. The bar slipped a *lot*. My last rep is debatable - prolly doesn't count as a lockout, and I almost got crushed while trying to re-rack the weight. Heck, even my depth is questionable on several of the reps. But I'm still proud. Lots of room for improvement, but I certainly faced down my fear and didn't quit, and that's the point!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlbZDF3nCe8 (WFS)

Give it a shot! I look forward to trying again soon so I can do it a little prettier.

Really impressive. A bunch of us had this challenge over a year ago. My best was 15 reps - I think a couple of the bigger guys hit 20+, but not many. Good job.

Amazing

****es me off though... You and many others have such monster squats and mine is TERRIBLE. I doubt I could do 20 reps with half that weight...

Doh, I didn't even think to search, just hadn't seen it pop up in awhile.

Oh well, maybe I can get some more people to try a good 20RM effort to experience the...pleasure...(ha!)

Thanks for the props, though. It's ugly but I think everyone should try it - couldn't very well post up a challenge without offering myself up, right?

Don't worry about the weight #, just get under the bar with something heavy for 10 reps and grind out 20! Keep squatting and you'll get stronger. I'm by no means spectacular at anything, or athletic, or even fit, but I've been pretty consistent with my squatting for the past year or so.

Re: 20 Rep Squats - My (ugly) 315x20 inside

I accidentally did a set of 20 rep squats at 215 a couple of weeks ago after doing 3x5 front squats. I say accidentally because I planned on doing a set of 20, but not a true 20 rep squat. I just wanted to get a set in at a high number that would not be too taxing. Well I underestimated how tired my legs were from doing the fronts squats(I also did ME TABATA squats the night prior) and ended up getting really tired at 8 and well you know how it goes from there. It was one of the scariest things I have done to myself in the gym and consequently one of the most rewarding mentally.

315 is ****ing ridiculous Jacob, maybe "you're not spectacular at anything, or athletic, or even fit" , but you have a huge pair and freaking iron will. This makes me want to do these again

That is an incredible effort. Definately fodder for motivation. I'm currently following Coach Burgener's squat program. I'm in week 4 of twelve. I'll have to rack up some weight and go for 20 sometime. I have done 225# for 20 reps and never thought much of it. It would be a definate show of testicular fortitude to grind it out now.

You made it look "easy", outstanding effort man !

For all the aspiring 20 rep squatters, you have to see this guy on youtube. I've been following his progress, he's been on a quest to get 180kg x 20 for some time and he got it and that set almost took 3 minutes ! Inspiring effort, fast forward to 3min for the beginning of the set : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hz1iXJndYY (wfs except for the cheering at the end)

I'd be stoked if I could get 315lbs x 20 one day...
