Press:

Power Clean:

5x65
5x65
5x65

15 situps on the decline bench.

1.5 mile run/jog: 13:30. Was with a friend who wanted to run, I figured it wouldn't hurt.

The GOMAD is putting weight on me...but so far it all looks like belly fat. Then again, I deliberately low-balled me starting weights and haven't been pushing too hard yet. Friday I expect to be putting effort into my squats, and by next Friday I should be at a challenging weight for all the lifts. Hopefully by next Friday some of this fat will be fueling muscle growth, rather than tightness in my waistband.

Monday:

Squat:
5x45 WU
3x75 WU
2x95 WU
5x105
5x105
5x105

Bench:
5x65 WU
3x85 WU
5x95
5x95
5x95

Deadlift:
5x111 WU
5x146

10 Strict, dead-hang Pullups

I missed last Friday because of my car dying and the travelling/time required to go car shopping. I'll get back on track now. My last semi-SS cycle took me up to 140 in the squat and 170 in the deadlift, so I've definately got room to go up (And that was 5x5 for each!) I'm excited to see where this takes me.

5x75
5x75

Friday might be my last 10 lb jump in the squat. Than again, maybe not. I am looking forward to the 161 deadlift.

Re: Ryan's Log.

Friday:

Squat:
5x75 WU
3x95 WU
2x115 WU

5x125
5x125
5x125

Bench:
5x65 WU
3x85 WU
2x95 WU

5x105
5x105
5x105

Deadlift:
5x111 WU
2x131 WU

5x161

11 Dead-Hang Pullups

Thoughts: This might have been my last 10 lb jump on the squat. I could probably push it if I really needed to, but steady progression is the name of the game here in SS. Bench can definately go up 10. Deadlift can go up another 15, but will probably slow after that.

I'm afraid of reaching my discomfort zone on the squat at such a low weight. By next Friday I will be tied with my previous 5x5 record (though I'm only doing 3 sets this time.) So I will consider next Monday my 'record setting' day when I get 3x5x145. Yup, I've never squatted more than 145 for 5 reps. This will be an exciting week!

Re: Ryan's Log.

Monday

Squat:
5x75 WU
3x95 WU
2x115 WU

5x130
5x130
5x130

Press:
5x65 WU
3x75 WU

5x85
5x85
5x85

Power Clean:
5x65 WU

5x85
5x85
5x85
5x85
5x85

17 GHD Situps

Thoughts: The squat is getting challenging. Every warm up set I think, "This is heavy, how am I going to go even heavier for work sets?" But then I get to work sets, stomp my feet, get the tension and intensity, and manage to move the bar through all 15 reps.

I realized today that the power cleans are a very important part of this program. I dismissed them at first, being the only explosive lift in this otherwise slow-moving workout, but the stress they put on the back and legs leaves me feeling like I really worked out my whole body, moreso than on deadlift days (don't get me wrong, I love my deadlifts!)

For the past three workouts, I've thought "This squat is heavy...no way I'll get heavier next time." Then I do. Strangely, working out motivates me to eat more and sleep more. I guess once I've done the work I don't want to see it go to waste!

Hey man, just found your log. Nice work, and I totally know what you mean about surprising yourself. I've even found that a day where I'm grunting and groaning and feeling like I'm about to **** myself seems to make it MORE likely that I'll be able to hit the increase next time. Strange....

And I agree with you about the power cleans. They feel almost like metcon sometimes.

All the best. Drink your milk!

Re: Ryan's Log.

Hey Scott, welcome to my log! I was getting kind of lonely in here... It seems like the "What the hell?" factor is very common among people doing SS. I'm always glad to hear it, beacuse today I tied my previous PR and I definately felt a conflicted feeling. At the bottom of the squat I realized I could definately support more weight. However, there is a fear that strikes me each time I start down and feel the tension in my muscles...wondering if I'll collapse at the bottom. It's a strange mix of confidence and uncertainty. Who knew lifting could get so philosophical?

So, yes, today I tied my squat PR and my press PR!

Friday:

Squat:
5x95 WU
3x115 WU
2x130 WU

5x140
5x140
5x140

Press:
5x75 WU
2x85 WU

5x90
5x90
5x90

Power Clean:
2x65 WU

5x90
5x90
5x90
5x90
5x90

18 GHS Situps

I didn't sleep or eat well yesterday, thanks to having just about the most bizzare day I've had in a while. That probably hurt. The reason this is important is I'm debating lowering my increases in the clean and the press to 2.5 lbs because I felt sort of weak on them. However, I did accomplish all the reps, so maybe with the 2 days of rest and a better committment to eating and sleeping hard I think Monday will be a great day across the board.

Yeah, I've been toying with the 2.5 lb idea for a couple weeks now. Definitely wait until you've stalled and reset once to do it though--I at least have been amazed at how long the 5 lb jumps have continued. Getting 115 up yesterday was a shocker; I was convinced it was going to be the stall day. Felt tired, ****ed off, weak... and had my best workout in a long time. <shrug>
