Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Humbling indeed, but just the therapy that my previously dislocated shoulders need for increased stability. It's amazing how much that one part of my body regressed over the winter when I wasn't doing much of anything but skiing. I've got them hung on the porch, so I get to pop out there and play with them anytime. I'm sure it will make a big difference just being able to do skin the cats, dips, and L-sits. Tested myself last night on the CF North 30-second standard and found that doable, but the rings were shaking like a couple of frightened puppies at the end. High-work moves like dips and MUs are great, but I think it's an even better workout for me to push to the point of static hold failure. I can really feel it in the shoulder stablizers and know it will do me a world of good.

Thanks for checking in.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

5/17 - morning workout

Quads felt dead coming in. In retrospect, I hadn't recovered from those heavy DLs two nights before. This workout took a long time with two kids to manage, but the rest was probably for the best.

Gabriel (4) and Cassidy (2) worked OHS at 5# hangs on rings and bar, and Gabe worked DB swings (3#x21). Form needs work, but they're off to a better start than me. "Dad, the garage is like a playground, but with exercise toys." (Oh, wait this is my log.)

Squat 195x5x3 (form solid, but this is still light weight)
Bench press 163x4 (so close on 5) - 160x5x2
Powerless clean 141x5 (one squat clean + some ugly stuff in there - one muscle power clean; 2 with arms, legs &/or bar akimbo)
141x1 + 4 jump shrugs - 136 x 3 + 3 jump shrugs

Amazing how quick you can lose it on the Oly-analogue lifts. The legs weren't strong begin with, but I was suprised how putting 5# on would cause me to lose it so thoroughly after what was a halfway decent showing earlier in the week. Still need to drill form on this. Rest-day skill work starts today.

Was pretty happy with BP. Got stuck on the first rep just shy of lockout due to distraction by an overly conversational family. After 5 seconds of isometric work prior to failure, I dropped weight and was really happy to push through the full sets of five.

Happy that you are finally playing with those rings. Just don't forget to put that money back in the kids' college fund. I see you've hung them under your porch, too. Take some pics underneath there. I promise they'll come out magical.

Keep it up, Haskell.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Took a bonus rest day. Despite my form improvements, the knees aren't terribly enamored of squatting 3 days per week. Not making any radical changes yet, since the program will have run it's course before too long. I also needed the extra recovery time, because I had a little too much fun Saturday night , and the kids didn't exactly have mercy on me when I wanted to sleep in in the morning.

Skill work for power clean.
Jump and land with PVC repeatedly.
Hang power cleans 15x5
Hi-Lo-below knee hang power cleans 65x5 each
Hang power cleans 115x3
Hang power cleans 135x3

Form looked solid until last set. More a power issue than form for that. Need more rest before hitting the PCs again.

Ring play - attempted MUs, Z-front lever pullups (got 2), back lever (closer than it has a right to be, but not for long)
Max dips 9-7-7 (did these Saturday after SS, getting 7, and figured I do much better when the pushing muscles were fresh - guess not )

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Ha! You and I should form a mutual admiration society. I'll praise your endurance when you feel like you ran for crap, and you can praise my strength when I feel like I lifted for crap.

That said, I did just check my home log and saw that 145 is my 1RM (not that I've really worked the lift before now), so I guess 135x3 is respectable for a rest day. I sure felt weak though (although I may have sniffed out a form issue while playing with the PVC this morning).

Feeling much better today and looking forward to the daily challenge of picking up more heavy stuff.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

My immune system is all fired up trying to kill the little cold that snuck in during my hangover Sunday and had me feeling all arthritic and weak, but an easy bike ride with the family got me loosened up to go back for more.

Squat 205x5x3 - felt solid; maybe the knee issues are from the jump rope
Press 105x5x2+105x4 - this one is a brutally slow progression, may mix it up
Deadlift 285x5 - back rounded some on last two reps; will only add a little next time, but it still felt strong
Push press - 115x5, 125x5 - ow my wrist; I may sub this in for the strict press for a bit. I could use the extra power work.
Chair squat - 115x5-165x5-185x5 (too easy, need a lower chair to make this worthwhile)
Max ring dips - 10 (been GTGing, was suprised to get this many after the workout)
Feeling strong tonight. Goodnight all.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Good to see you're beating up that cold Nice session you did yesterday !

I think I felt a tweak at the place you described, but not too close to the curve. It felt like an uncomfortable muscle contraction at the bottom of my left lat. I was just bothering during the squats.

You're definitely right on with the extra rest days, it's the most important ! I might take an extra one before my chalenge week.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Sounds like a similar tweak. Funny place to get hurt doing squats, huh? Guess it really is a full-body exercise. Even pullups don't seem to bother it. It's like the muscle got pinched or something.

Another good night. Solid form on the squats (felt way easier than on my last climb up the weight ladder), solid bench, and improving power clean (although form inconsistencies here made some reps less than lovely to behold).

Squat 215x5x3
Bench 163x5x3
Power Cleans 141x5x3

"Little Nicole"
3 rounds for time and reps
400 m
max pullups
22-15-13=50 in 8:43.

I was cooked after that and decided my goat could eat my shorts.
