I have the spiral locking collar adjustable dumbbells at home. What I do is load one end with most of the weight and another a single plate, and hold it from that end. It gives it more of a natural swinging motions. Of course, I would only recommend it with the spiral collars, otherwise you'll have weight flying across the garage. I'm at work, otherwise I'd attach a picture.
