What do you guys think of this? I have been trying to throw the bar up a few inches at the top of the movement and catch it to start my descent. A buddy brought this in from Bulgaria (but no spetznaz shovel) and it seems to really increase the suffering.

It really makes sense. Fred Hatfield talks about compensatory acceleration, the Westside guys do speed days to improve synaptic rate coding and consequently rate of force development. Zatsiorski (sp?) talks about this extensively in his book Science and Practice of Strength Training. One obvious consideration here is the potential for injury if one misses the catch. Throwing a shot put or even various sized stones is a great way to get the same benefit while minimizing the risk.
