Nadia,

I won't be there that week, but being a former SC resident I can make some general recommendations for hotels.

If they are using CF North SC in Scotts Valley, there are a couple hotels there that are pretty good. The Best Western on Scotts Valley drive would be your best choice. There's the Hilton off of Highway 17, but I think they are kind of pricey.

If the cert is at HQ, find a hotel that IS NOT in the Beach Flats area near the Boardwalk. Everything down there is gross and the area is a hotbed of gang crime- trust me on this one, having worked for the sheriff's dept. there, I know. There are a lot of hotels on Ocean Street as you come into SC, but I'd be wary of those too. Aptos has a Best Western that is decent right off of Highway 1 at State Parks Drive, that would be my first choice.

There is another hotel in Capitola off of Bay Street, the name escapes me now, but I believe it is also a Best Western.

Look the info up on line and ask them questions about their location to be sure. You can probably finagle some type of better price out of them too if you tell them you're there on business, as prices in SC aren't cheap. Good luck!!

I used to work security at the Boardwalk. Why you gotta hate on the Flats, Ian?

HAHAHA, that's too funny, Brandon. You know EXCATLY what I am talking about then...there was a good reason you guys were armed down there!

I just remember looking for parolees at large, prbationers, or other cretins and the first place we hit was the Flats-checking the streets and all the hotels. We always found our guy and usually a few other treats. I always felt bad when I rolled down there in the summer and saw all the tourist families staying at the hotels thinking, "Ahhh, Santa Cruz - this is nice down here" and then wondering why their cars were getting broken into and finding hypes in the parking lot. Good times, I tell ya'.

I was a Guest Services Officer, so they just gave me a radio. Sacrificial sheep of the security department.

They had a couple stabbings while I was there. Never a dull moment.

Nah, mostly dull moments, it's still the same old job.

Ian,

Thanks so much for the info, eventhough now I am a bit scared...ha.

one more question, I'm assuming it's best to rent a car rather then cab it back and forth?

Thanks so much for the help!

Yes- Renting a car would be the best option. Cabs nowadays are expensive, so it might get pricey quick. If you wanted to grab a lunch somewhere, you'd need to cab it since neither location has anything really close by within quick walking distance, unless something has moved in nearby in the recent past. A few minutes in the car will get you to grocery stores like Safeway in Soquel, Zanotto's in Scotts Valley, or some other decent choices. Let me know if you have any other questions. Take care!

So....

Should we still avoid all those hotels in Santa Cruz that are close to the beach and broadwalk?

You could do it if you've got to. I mean, we're not talking Somalia here. But you're not missing much; there aren't any especially nice places down there.
