Embrace the suck.

Nice job on those pull-ups, and keep channeling Coach B. As my trainer tells me with the Oly lifts, "Stomp your feet, pull HARD, get MEAN". Rage Against the Machine (1992 vintage) goes well with cleans.

Hike and ski Tuckerman's Ravine - Mt. Washington, NH
Hooooooooyahh!!!! Ah, gods I think tuckerman's ravine is what I miss most of the whole east coast. Every year I wanted to win the lottery and do the Mt. Washington Run, and never got it... one of those things I was sore about never doing, when I decided to quit distance running.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Away from my garage gym, so I brought some dumbells and decided to do a workout that Grace P put up on her log. I did my warmup sets, uttered the motto (see below), and hit it. Had some choice words for Grace by the time it was all done. I think "evil ," "you suck," and "next time I'm in Houston, I'm gonna kick you " were the exact phrases that sprung to mind somewhere between rounds 2 & 3.

3 rounds for time
400m
8 Curtis P. complex (40# DB - squat clean, alt. lunges, push press)
8 pullups

16:55

Whew! Lifting heavy weight is easy. These CF-type WODs suck. Sorry I'm so hateful, Grace.

You are HAAS! If ranting my name in vain gets you there, then do it!

CF Houston can cook up some nasty WODs. You should try CF Houston's Cindy's Evil Twin Grinder. I'll post it here next time. Gotta go work on my website (it's a Saturday night, mind you!)

Pain is only weakness leaving your body, bud! Go headstrong!

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Ha. The ranting might have helped me get through that last run. It certainly was more productive than cursing my lazy winter, which was the real cause of suffering. The Curtis P's were a beast for me, but it felt more like CF than anything I've done since my last FGB in March. Hadn't done lunges in a long time, so that was a literal -kicker. Good to get in a solid metcon. Hopefully, I can keep that up once a week without hindering my SS progress. Guess I'll know tomorrow night, when I attempt my heaviest 5-rep squat workout in 10 years.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Warm up with yard work in the sun. Felt cooked from Saturday's w/o, yesterday's beach visit, and today's chores, so I went to the gym with excuses to burn. The irony of me saying that heavy lifting was easy a couple days ago was not lost on me, as I worked out the kinks in my warmup sets.

225x5x3 matches a personal best from ~10 years ago, which was 225x6x1
107x5x3 another PB
290x5x3 ditto - form much better than last time out, despite my son doing his part to try to distract me mid-set (Daddy's not very nice when he's lifting heavy weight.)

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

Patrick, do you think being in the sun sucks the energy out of you? Tash and I have experienced something a few times: hanging out in the sun, lazing in pools, just floating around, snorkeling a little, it feels near impossible to go from this to a workout. The difference it makes for us is huge.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

The sun certainly seems to slow me down. In Oman, it can probably kill you, so no wonder you lose energy afterwards. I drank twice as much water yesterday as I normally would, despite never really getting sweaty when out in the sun. In dry and/or windy conditions, it's very easy to sweat slower than it evaporates and not realize you are losing a lot of water.

Re: Starting over with Starting Strength

5/28/2008

Back squat 235x5x3 (PR at 5 reps)
Bench press 165x5x3
Power clean 146x3x5

Switched to more sets and fewer reps on PC. This definitely helped, as form held together better for the most part. (One set didn't look good.) Otherwise, I just jumped it up and racked it. Gonna have to learn to move faster. With all those sets, even a 3 exercise SS session becomes a long workout, and I really should be working adding weighted pullups and/or sprints in there somewhere.
