Still not clear on silent inflammation
I have watched all the videos on CrossFit Journal and gone to Zone website to get more information but have come back without still really understanding what exactly is silent inflammation.
Is it an inflammation of cells? Is it just a term used for having too much toxic fat in your system? I would like a proper scientific explanation from Sears, but don't think he is on this board ![]() |

Re: Still not clear on silent inflammation
I would describe it as inflammation that you don't feel pain from but still causes damage to the body. That is simple explanation. Omega-3 supplementation is usually pushed as a way to prevent silent inflammation.

Re: Still not clear on silent inflammation
This is a gross oversimplification but....
In your cells and tissues there are a great many different processing going on at any one time. Some of these are processes that may tie in or be associated with or caused by inflammation such as specialised parts (cells) of the immune system doing certain tasks or certain cells changing the way they respond to outside influence (such as hormonal messages or chemicals in the enviroment) or express certain proteins within the cell. Other processes might be lumped in with those that are broadly the opposite of an inflamed state. Many of these are going on to some extent all the time. It is to what extent they're taking place and the reason for this that makes up inflammation, it's a kind of balance with the 'net' being your status: inflamed or not. A cell itself can be behaving in a certain way (expressing certain genes etc) due to outside influence be it due to the state of the enviroment the cell finds itself in (e.g. a burn) or because of some chemical messenger from another cell (e.g. cytokine) telling it to change it's balance of behaviours. Really all the 'inflammation' means is a change in the way that a cell behaves, meaning the way it expresses proteins, communicates with the outside world, absorbs things, how it's membrane works etc etc. The eicosanoids are purely one type of communicating factor that modifies cell behaviour. Plenty on the interweb about it. |
