After jumping into the pull-up position are you to let yourself down slowing?

The idea of jumping pullups, like jumping dips is to allow for reps you could not otherwise do and to give you quite the cardio push as well. You can do the pullups or dips with a negative on the way down to make the exercise more difficult but in the case of the ring dips you can post on the top for just a moment and then drop back to the ground. In the case of the jumping pullup though you don't want to just fall through, use your arms to slow your descent slightly and then release at the bottom to do it again. Add a burpee at the bottom to make it more of a challenge.

As Coach pointed out, gymnasts develop strength in their movements in this order:

eccentric
static
concentric

So when you are first learning a movement like the pullup, you should first get good at the eccentric (negative) portion of the pullup. Second, you should develop the static hold at the top, bottom and points in between. Finally, you should work the concentric phase.

This also works with Handstand Pushups, rope climbs and other gymnastic skills.
