Is pausing in squats cheating?

As I get to my limits in 5-rep and 3-rep sets of squats (front/back), I find myself doing a squat, pausing to take a breath, then doing the next rep. The bar stays on my shoulders/blades through the pause; I'm not racking it.

Is that cheating? For 5-rep sets of squats, do you have to stand-up-and-go, or is that one-breath pause OK?

Thanks,

Antun

Re: Is pausing in squats cheating?

It's fine. You are supposed to breath. Holding your breath for a 5rm is a good way to pass out.

Re: Is pausing in squats cheating?

I can't imagine doing a heavy set of five back squats without breathing in between reps without passing out.

Re: Is pausing in squats cheating?

If the bar does not get racked, then it's one set.

Re: Is pausing in squats cheating?

WWRD?

On resting between reps in a set:

"It varies with the length of the set. Fives or fewer get a breath to reset. Longer sets might take two breaths. During the last few reps of a true 20RM squat, just do what Jesus tells you." - Rip
