Unlocking facet joints

I keep locking up at L4/L5. Is there a self help way of unlocking these? I'm trying to teach my partner to do it but he's not always around as he works shifts? I've tried bending over and twisting but its just not doing it.

Re: Unlocking facet joints

could try hanging from a door frame or pull bar and twist hips side to side.
See if the extend stretch and rotation loosens it up so it slips back into place.

I had one after scuba , surf tossed me on shore while crawling out. Hurts like a harpoon in thru the chest. I tried for a week, nothing ended up seeing a PT who bounced on me and pop.. instant relief.

If no luck on your own, could try asking a PT or chiropractor.

Re: Unlocking facet joints

Hanging and swinging/rotating certainly helps, one side unlocks well the other doesn't budge. I do go to a physio/chiro but it just costs so much.

Interestingly I just read comment last night from a physio that that high velocity type (HVT) twisting to unlock facet joints is actually bad because its non discriminate in which facets it unlocks. Her comment was that it can make some facet joints very unstable which then compounds the problem. I'm actually off to buy her book today (Sarah Keys - The back Sufferers Bible - wfs).

hmmmm makes sense, ..
I wonder if a hot tub soak for 20 minutes then perhaps a just the hanging stretch, and see if it feels better. Maybe having the muscles lengthen a bit will break the spasm and unlock that way?

Re: Unlocking facet joints

Along those lines there is this article on a seemingly reputable website. They suggest the likes of deep heat/dencorub, hot packs and painkillers to throughly relax everything and then some moves.
