I've been doing the Mass Gain Program from issue 17 of Performance Menu. Also, I have been doing IF - eating from 8am to noon - waiting one hour after moring workout. 1500 calories per day. Paleo based low carb. I have been on this for 10 weeks. I am down from 205 lbs to 184 lbs. About 8% bodyfat now. I never thought it was possible to gain strenght and lose fat at the same time, but during the past ten weeks, I've lost over 20 pounds, and increased my max bench to 205, max C&J to 208, and max squat to 265, and i've gone from 2 dead hang pullups to 18! I would like to know if anyone else has used either IF or the mass gain program with any success. Thanks, this is my first post.

Definitely not. I sell cars -that's it, lol. To elaborate a bit on the eating, every Saturday is my cheat day. I eat as much of whatever I want. As for the other six days I am completely disciplined. I have been following the eating approach just like it says in issue 17 P.M. (lean meats, eggs, nuts, veggies, and some fruit) And as for the training I have just done exactly what is says. I'm thinking that I could have been making larger strenght gains with more calories, but getting back to 5% BF is my main goal. I'm going to keep this up until I'm there, and then re-think things. By the way I love the IF. It sucked when I started, but I feel great now - I don't crash in the afternoons anymore. The only supplements I use are some low-carb protein powder, but only when I can't get enough protein from other sources. By the way, I don't even know what brand it is!

Intermittent Fasting. You can do a search for a whole plethora of threads if that doesn't ring a bell.

The increased strength is impressive, but going from 205lbs to 184lbs scares the little guys who were planning on using the program for... mass gain. I am sure the vast majority of the weight was fat, what was your bodyfat at the begining?

"1500 calories per day" for a male is extremely low...and certainly will not result in weight gain. I need at least 3000 cal to put on muscle size and I am not a big person (6'1", 185lbs), just my metabolism runs wild!

i wish i only need 3000 to put on size..i need a minimum of 3500 to add on weight.... (6'1 170 lbs). All those days of playing sports really did a number on my metabolism....i know i know, ill be thanking it later when im older.

I guess, in retrospect, I am using the Mass Gain Program for the wrong reason. I was not trying to get bigger. However, I am gaining muscle while losing most of my fat. Body Fat was about 17% before - huge difference in the mirror now. My goals are to be below 180 at christmas with a 225 bench, 155 press, 20 pullups, and a 245 clean. So, suffice to say, it's been working so far. I'm ramping up the calories to 2000 starting this Monday, and will increase by 100 every week to start - will adjust if necessary.

Man, I know it sounds stupid to some people, but I wish I had that problem.
When I first started working out in high school I was 6'2, 125 lbs...you can imagine how much fun a metabolism like that is. At my peak I was 6'3, flux178-183 lbs, with a 265 bench & 330 squat...as long as I was eating 4000+ cals a day. At 2500-3000, my weight crawls right back down to 165-170 & I bench like a 12 year old girl. (Message edited by Pistol_32 on October 27, 2006) |
