Re: Where's the Girl Power?

That is funny Camille, I hear ya on that I am not a strong runner either. I haven't logged in here in a while, but in the time I have been gone. I have managed achieve my goal of doing pull ups!! YAY I was so surprised when I did it, and my hubby missed it because he is at Warrant Officer school but I can manage 4 kipping pull ups in a row. But imagine my surprise today when I got my first callous tare at the end of todays WOD. I feel like I have officially been inducted into Crossfit. LOL

Good for Kellie! That is inspiring, Tuck!

One of my bigger gals got her first real push-ups tonight. 3 of 'em, as a matter of fact. And then she did some more. I was so proud of her.

(And congrats to Deljean and everybody else with recent accomplishments!)

Re: Where's the Girl Power?

Rebecca,

When I am running (which is only for the WODs - I am not much of a runner either), I try to breathe in and out for the same amount of time. I try to drag out those breaths for as many paces as I can for as long as I can. Usually, I will start with 4-4, fall to 3-3 when I am getting a little tired and end up with a 2-2 when I start getting winded. I really try to keep the breath counts as long as I can. I find that breathing out slowly and controlled has cut down on side stitches for me. This may be unorthodox, but it works for me. (Focusing on my breathing tempo also helps get my mind off of the distance. )

BTW - I don't post too much, but I regularly read this thread. I've gotten a lot of good pointers for developing pull-ups and HSPUs. Coach Tucker, et. al., thanks for taking the time to read and give advice here.

It's also really, really motivating.

When the new Crossfit Houston tshirts came out at our affiliate I promised myself I'd buy one when I got my first pullup.

Monday I pounded myself on some weighted sit ups and wound up needing to buy a CF-H tshirt to cover the blood stain on my shorts. I wore it to finish the WOD, but it is now washed and put up til I get that darn pullup once and for all!! ACK!
Good going to the mamas who already got theirs. You rock! WTG!!!

Stephanie,
I'll give you an answer after I "survive" this week-ends Crossfit clinic at Camp Pendleton, CA - to me, and what small amounts I've delved into Crossfit - what better way to get in shape and quickly! I work part time as a personal trainer and I am soooooooooo bored with counting reps when I'd rather have a client bust out Tabita Squats and play with the "girls" - myself included!!!

Keep up the great work - the rewards will be many

Re: Where's the Girl Power?

@Rebecca: Regarding side stitches when running - I used to have a problem with these until I read somewhere that you should try to exhale when your left foot strikes the ground. For some reason if you exhale when your right foot hits the ground, it puts pressure on your diaphragm which causes the stitch. Weird, but it worked for me.

Re: Where's the Girl Power?

Thank you very much for all the running tips folks! Beth - i had heard about the left foot/right foot thing - I just couldn't remember which was the right foot to exhale on ...

I tried to use the POSE running method last night for about the last 300m of a mile run - and it really seemed to free up my breathing - but my calves are KILLING me today. Ow.

And a big congratulations to Deljean on the pull-ups!
