100 dips instead of 100 push ups in Angie. Why the original choice of exercises?

Just thinking of how the workouts were originally constructed and have become part of Crossfit culture and I wondered how push ups made the cut over dips which seem to give slightly more bang for your buck.
Also maybe a weights Angie would be interesting...any ideas?
Angie with Kettlebells could be a real blast!

Dips for most people are worse than pullups.

It becomes a blower working instead of metabolic..

Re: 100 dips instead of 100 push ups in Angie. Why the original choice of exercises?

I've done Angie with KB swings instead of push-ups, when injured. I found the sit-ups harder than usual, since both the kipping PUs and the swings hurt your core pretty badly. So yeah, swings might give more of a bang for the buck vs push-ups if you do them in isolation, but if they slow you down for the WOD overall, it's arguable that they are worse as part of that WOD. Coach Glassman certainly knows about dips and swings...I doubt he overlooked them when designing that particular WOD. (or whoever it was).

There's no harm in experimenting but I think you should resist the urge to analyze the meaning of any given workout too much. Just as each movement is only part of the WOD, the WOD itself is only part of an ongoing and unknown program of many WODs. Since there is a growing body of evidence that it works as it is, why not just do it the easier way? You might sub in dips for push-ups in Angie, and get in a tougher workout, then the next day's WOD might have dips again and you'd be fried. So you might opt to skip that WOD, and program yourself something without dips. Before you know it, you're not doing Crossfit at all. You're doing an entirely new program with no proven results, and a test population of one vs a program with a test population of hundreds of thousands.

If you want to add some weight, just do it with a weighted vest. I sometimes like to work in my IOTV (body armor) just to get a more real life functionality to in the WOD. But that's just part of my life right now.

I did this one (subbed dips for PUs) and it took me almost twice as long (but then, I am not really very good at either).

Don't mess with the benchmarks. They're benchmarks for a reason.

Do we have to have this discussion with every workout? Why wasn't Fran done with thrusters and MU's? Do whatever you want.
