I was talking to this guy at a party and he said he had been looking at a book that was supposed to be a sort of historical best guess at the way the Spartans trained. I thought he said the author was Bova, but now I can't find it on Amazon or anything. Anybody know more about this?

"Spartan Health Regime" by Anthony Bova. Google it to find his site.

It's not a bad book, overpriced though. His diet advice is basically from Weston A. Price, and he pretty much focuses on bodyweight exercises. The marketing on the site can be a bit aggressive("Blowtorch...body fat")

Good grief, sounds like he went to the Matt Furrey School for Copy Writing and Web Design.

Thanks Ron. I'll check it out. I wasn't really planning on following his program or anything, but it did pique my interest.

Pretty sure that regime wasn't used to train the spartans on the movie "300"

Dont know the realtionship between gym jones and crossfit which im sure is so very well documented throughout the message board but im asuming there is some relationship. Those guys looked way much better than the guys in the testimonials on that site!

So id say crossfitters are the modern day spartans!

Funny you say about M Furrey, because he did go to one of his seminars!!!

A. Bova is an Aussie and has built up his Spartan Work over a long period.I droped some cash on his book more then 8 years ago now (before I found Crossfit)when he was just getting started and even then he expressed his admiration of Furrey for his marketing not his information.

The concepts on Health he goes with are sound but nothing that you won't find on this very site for free.

Training concepts are based on compound movement and again you have a better reference point right here.
But for when he began Bova was for me at least a good blast of fresh air in comparsion to the BB metality dominating Aus at the time.

After reading "Gates of Fire" I was all ready to go out and do some Tree *humping*.

Then I figured I would stick to CF.

I think anyone selling training "secrets" that only he can tell you or get from his paid forum is full of shait.
