I am trying to figure out ab exercises that don't involve firing the hamstring to execute.

Any ideas?

Richard, any exercise where your shoulders are the fulcrum, your abs are the lever and your legs are the load. For example if you lie on your back on a bench and hold it behind your neck and then raise your legs vertically to the ceiling, your will use abs without hamstrings. The reverse is also true, whenever your feet are the fulcrum (or anchor), your abs the lever and upper body the load (eg situp) your hamstrings will fire because they contribute to the lever action (ie pulling against the fulcrum). Hope this makes sense! It is better explained with diagrams:-) The short answer is anything where you lift your legs rather than your upper body, eg knee to elbow.
