Getting Kicked out of Globo-gym
I got kicked out of a 24 hour fitness in Houston today while doing deadlifts from Saturday's WOD. They don't have a platform for lifting, and their matted area for free weights is usually too cluttered with the cro-magnon body builder type to fit in a barbell. Thus, I had to take it to an open area that wasn't matted. Their club manager said I was dropping the weight too hard when in fact I was doing my best to control the weight as much as possible.
I don't want to judge a book by it's cover, but the mere fact the manager told me I was dropping it "too hard" alerted me to his degree of experience with fitness (or lack thereof). Anyways, has anyone ever had any experience like this, and if so what did you do about it? |

I really can't go into my solution till the Statue of Limitations runs out.
Seriously, ask him about the policy, why they have it, so on and so forth. Maybe you can deadlift only on the matted areas or some other compromise. He may say something about saftey and what not. If he does, come back here and someone can give you an intelligent, possible research verified, response. |

I got kicked out an AF gym for Vibram Five Fingers the other day. I went to the manager but he interprets the reg differently than every other AF gym I've been to. Just have to deal with it.

Re: Getting Kicked out of Globo-gym
I thought about buying bumper plates and/or bringing cheap mats. The only thing that stops is me the principal of having to buy equipment when I'm already paying them to use their equipment. I'm sure I'll have to get over that little nugget though.

Something like these. You only need two. If they don't have any bumper plates (I don't know why I would even entertain the thought of a globo-gym actually having real bumper plates), then yes - any purchase in that regards would probably leave you better off just buying a Pendlay bar and ditching them altogether. |

Re: Getting Kicked out of Globo-gym
I too have had this same problem with deadlifting at my GloboGym, however I have found a solution. Since I DL 400+ lbs. the rubber flooring doesn't dampen the noise, even though my gym has the barbells that have the rubber coating. Not sure if anybody on the boards has done this or not, but here is my solution:
Take 2 or 4 ab mats and fold each over once and place them on the floor under each side of the barbell plates, this way you have either 2 or 4 extra layers of thick padding under the plates. It makes deadlifting MUCH quieter. Since I have been using the ab mats to dampen the noise I have had absolutely no issues. And if management has a problem with you using their ab mats for this purpose, tell them that the barbell plates are cleaner than peoples' sweaty bodies (assuming your gym is like mine and people don't wipe off their mats when they are done). Thoughts? |

Re: Getting Kicked out of Globo-gym
Dave,
Used to use the ol' abmat bumper back at the globo I used to work at. Tested it out by dumping loads from over head. Dampened the noise to no louder than using regular bumpers to the best of my audible capacities. Then the ab mats disappeared, continued to dump the rubber coated iron plates from over head, got reprimanded, and fell back on my defense that "Chuck Norris does it". I shortly thereafter made my way out of that place to where I'm at now. |
