Saga of a CrossFitter: David's log

So I've been a lurker for nearly a year now and I figured it was time to start contributing to the message boards. I'm starting this log to hopefully stay on track with CFSB. I completed my first CrossFit workout on January 7, 2008 and since then have gone through a few cycles of starting strength, several months of main page WOD's and now CFSB. It seems that CFSB is exactly the prescription I was looking for, as I was always happy with my strength gains after SS but could never really stay as strong as I wanted to doing only the main page WOD's.

At this point I've completed 2 weeks of CFSB with a few missed workouts this past week due to coaching baseball tryouts and staying late into the night making cuts. The main goal of this log is to keep me accountable; so that I have more desire, drive, and determination to push myself each and every day I hit the gym. 3-2-1- GO!

Re: Saga of a CrossFitter: David's log

Monday 2/16/2009

Back Squat

275 X 5
275 X 5
275 X 5

5 rounds of Cindy

5 pull ups
10 push ups
15 squats

Time: 4:40

Haven't done a metcon in probably 3 months so this was just to see if I could do it. I'll hit it harder next time.

Deadlift

245 x 3
275 x 3
305 x 3

I'm making sure that I'm really careful at the start with my deadlift. Last week i did a set of 5 reps with 340# so I know I can handle a lot more weight but don't want to burn out too quickly.

Grace (30 clean and jerks with 135# for time)
5:50(pr)

Thursday 2/19/2009

50 ring dips
run 400m
50 push ups
run 400m

Time: 12:55

I was trying to do the main site WOD which had 50 handstand pushups and another 400m run but once I got to the handstand pushups I was just rocked. I waited around for a few more minutes and did some handstand practice, ran another 400m and just called it a day.

Friday 2/20/2009

Front Squats

warm up
45 x 5
45 x 5
95 x 5
95 x 5

work sets
145 x 5
165 x 5
185 x 5

4 rounds for time

5 reps 165# power clean
run 200m
10 knees to elbows

time: 11:20

I was really happy with the power cleans today. They felt easy and the workout went smoothly.

Saturday 2/21/2009

Shoulder press

105 x 5
115 x 5
125 x 3

I failed on the last set. My shoulders are still hurting from Grace and then those ring dips and pushups and attempt at handstand pushups.

Didn't feel like doing a metcon today because I was so discouraged about the press.

Max effort pull ups
25

Not a PR by a long shot, but I am about 10 pounds heavier than the last time I tested pullups, so I can't be too upset.

Monday 2/23/2009

Back Squat

240 x 5
260 x 5
280 x 5

These were easy and I'm contemplating doing 290 x 5 next week, but I'll see how I feel.

Diane (not as rx'd)

time: 8:02

I got through the first 21 deadlifts with 225# unbroken but once again the shoulders were an issue. I struggled through the handstand pushups and decided to just switch over to regular pushups for the sets of 15 and 9 in order to get the benefits of the metcon. I must have taken about 3 or 4 minutes just trying to bang out the first 21 handstand pushups. Gonna work on my handstand strength so the next time I can do this as rx'd

Re: Saga of a CrossFitter: David's log

Friday 2/27/2009

I missed deadlifts and a metcon day because of a coaching meeting, a winter sports recognition program and baseball tryouts. It's been a long couple of days but I'm back on track and rested now.

Front squats

155 x 5
175 x 5
195 x 5(pr)

These felt easy and I know I have a long way to go before I fail.

Tabata Squats

22/21/20/21/20/20/20/20 Total: 164

This was the first time I've done Tabata squats and I was very pleased with my score. About 2 minutes after I finished both of my legs cramped up. I tried to make it down the stairs to get a drink from the fountain and every step was painful. But after about 5 minutes I was able to do my usual gymnastics work of front rolls, handstand practice, walking on my hands, planch practice, etc.

Re: Saga of a CrossFitter: David's log

Saturday 2/28/2009

Shoulder press

110 x 5
120 x 5
130 x 3

I almost got 4 reps but the last one just wouldn't go. I held it for about 5 seconds and was just pulling my body underneath the bar when the arms just gave out. Guess I'll switch over to sets of 3 for next week and see how that goes.

4 rounds for time of:

5 power cleans 176#
10 burpees

Time: 7:51

I was going for a workout similar to the games deadlift burpee workout but didn't want to tire myself out for deadlifts on Tuesday, so I substituted the power cleans. Strength was good and I didn't get too winded on the burpees. Probably could have made this 15 burpees instead of 10.

Re: Saga of a CrossFitter: David's log

Monday 3/2/2009

Back Squat

warm up sets
45 x 5 x 2
135 x 5
185 x 5

Work sets

245 x 5
265 x 5
285 x 5

Metcon

this didn't really go as planned. I was feeling really drained and wasn't sure if I wanted to do a thruster/pullup workout, or overhead squats/pullup. I decided to go for as many thrusters as I could and see what happened.

95# thrusters/pullups

round 1: 13(lost my rythm)/10
round 2: 10/10
round 3: modified thrusters to 75# 10/10

I gave up at this point due to lack of energy. I'll be sure not to try a back squat and thruster workout together for a while.

Time: 5:21 (took at least a 1 minute break to go downstairs and get water)
