I am incompetent regarding lifting straps. I can't figure out how to use two of them at once. When I just used one for a little while when one of the fingers of my left hand was incapacitated, I would put my hand through the loop, wrap the end around the bar and through the loop, and then use my free hand to tighten the strap, tightening my hand against the bar.

But how do those of us without a third arm growing out of our chest tighten both straps without a free hand?

I'm sure that there is some really obvious solution to this problem, but I tried this morning and I wasn't able to pull it off (no pun intended).

Ross, no need to put the end through the loop. put the wrap on so the end comes out on the thumb side of your hand. The rest will be self explanatory. Go for snug, not strangled. That will give you an unbreakable grip without ruining your wrists. It will also make it easier to get rid of the bar, very important.

As they say when they hand out condoms in public schools, this is not to be construed as encouragement or endorsement of your immoral behavior, it's just that if you can't be good I want you to be safe.

Not such a stupid question. I think Dreschler's Encyclopedia of Weightlifting has a good description.

I use short, short straps. Basically a length of nylon webbing

and then I melt the ends together with a hot glue gun.

Don't wrap the loose end more than once around the bar.

Thanks, guys.

LOL at the condom analogy! Don't worry, Brian, only for supramaximal pulls for reps and lifts from the hang for reps; it takes too long to reset the hook grip.
