Re: Anything for DOMS?

The one thing that has helped me the most is fish oil. I used to take 9g per day, and now take 4.5g per day.

Of course, this is besides the standard sleep/foam rolling/massage/stretching, all of those things help as well.

And, don't forget that DOMS gradually fades in intensity once you are working out consistently. I am sure you are familiar with the intense DOMS you experience after you haven't worked out for several months.

Re: Anything for DOMS?

A couple of really good responses for the OP and a little bit of mis-interpretation of stuff about ibuprofen. NSAIDS are simply brilliant for chronic inflammatory issues, and are quite effective for every now and again pain or inflammation like DOMS. The are no longer in trainers rooms because of vicious abuse in the 80's and 90's which lead to a number of athletes with permanent kidney damage. Like anything, judicious use of NSAIDS is perfectly appropriate, and IMO forbidding an athlete to workout in absence of injury simply because s/he took a motrin is overkill.

Some athletes, especially older athletes with a "physically violent" athletic history like yours truly, simply need something to function. I've taken a COX-2 inhibitor 5-7 times/week for about 9 years to relieve pain in my hands. It works quite well for my back, hips, and left knee in an "oh by the way" manner, but I would put up with them if not for my hands.

DOMS, as we all know, will subside. It crops up in unfamiliar exercises or movements or volume (I'm just recovering from triceps DOMS from last weeks Main Page), and anything that will be a constant in your program will eventually fail to induce DOMS given reasonable volume and volume build.

Good thread. Thanks.

It's not a huge difference but I used to take a TBSP. of the powder every morning and felt better.

Re: Anything for DOMS?

Since I started taking Bromelain I don't get really sore now. I used to all the time.

Have you gone off it and gotten sore again?

Nope. I am taking it for inflammation for my shoulders so I really don't want to go off it right now. I can just tell you that I did my first squat and lunges workout with my new barbell set and had just a little bit of soreness compared to what I should have had. I would guestimate about 40%-50%. The most I had ever squatted before with DB was 60# and I did 115# for a few a few sets of 5. I was surprised I wasn't more sore. Bromelain is cheap. Maybe it works for you. Maybe it doesn't.

It is cheap, I just looked it up. I think I'll give it a try- any recommendations on dosing size, timing, etc?
