Question Quick Critique Please

This is the first day of my ZONE diet and I want to make sure I am starting off right.

I am 33 years old about 215lbs, I am pretty active running and usually doing the WOD several times a week. My goal is to shed my unwanted fat. I would like to drop around 15-20 lbs.

5 blocks-Breakfast- 1/2 Pita, 2 scrambled eggs, 2oz cheese, 3 slices of ham, 1/2 apple

2 blocks-Snack- 2 hardboiled eggs, 1 orange, 10 peanuts

5 blocks-Lunch- 13 slices of deli meat(4.5 oz), 2 oz cheese, 1 apple, 5 almonds

2 blocks-Snack- 2 hardboiled eggs, 1 orange, 10 peanuts

5 blocks-Dinner- 5oz chicken breast, 1 orange, 5 almonds

Total of 19 blocks

Also I was wondering about taking a protein shake before I go to bed at night. Does anyone else do this and how will it affect the zone diet.

Re: Quick Critique Please

I'd add some more veggies in there, right now its all fruit/meat/some bread. Green veggies will help in a lot of ways. They're healthy (the zone works with any food, but zoning with good food is even better) and they satisfy hunger because you can eat a lot of them. If you find yourself getting hungry, up the veggies.

Protein shakes before bed aren't in the zone (unless its a zone shake of course), and I don't think you'll benefit much from it. I cut all the protein powder out of my diet since starting the zone and I've gotten stronger and leaner since. No need for it.

Re: Quick Critique Please

Your 5 block meals are not in the Zone ratio. You need to add more Carbs. Combine this with Elliot's suggestion to add more veggies. Don't skimp on the carbs (especially the good ones) for fear of not losing weight. You need the energy (caloric intake) to assure your body that you are not in starvation mode so that it can let go of some fat.

Re: Quick Critique Please

I would ditch the protein shake, it is hindering your weight loss efforts.

If you feel the need to have something before bed or you are trying to put on muscle mass, go with whole milk, it is completely zone balanced.
