Another Masters age group

Turn 70 this year and would like to see a new masters' group added to competition. When I was younger and doing age group competitions in triathlons, biking, swimming, and more recently powerlifting, I probably would have read this and thought who cares. True, until you get here and find yourself still active!

Makes sense. Be intereting to see how many would participate.

when I compete in powerlifting, I usually get lumped into a 50+ bracket for lack of other competitors. BTW, I only got interested in that sport due to doing periodic crossfit totals.

Re: Another Masters age group

IMHO there will be greater numbers as the years go on. I started CF aged 58 now heading for 64 ( still wondering what the heck happened ) and sure hope to be still CF'ing at 70+

I think it is only a matter of time till a 70+ masters age group is added. I also think there need to be youth group/s added in as well

So totally stoked that the 2014 open is over and that I manged to post a score in every WOD

Re: Another Masters age group

Great stuff Pat. I agree and hope to see the age groups broken down like you mentioned moving forward.

Re: Another Masters age group

I agree, Helen. It's just a matter of time. As the number of competitors in that age category increases, it will become much more feasible.

Re: Another Masters age group

I think it would be better to re-order to masters divisions.

35-42
43-50
51-58
59-66
67+

What reasoning did you have for this? Just curious.

Re: Another Masters age group

On the low end, that is where most masters divisions start. I just think it gets saturated when there are too many divisions.

The current masters divisions are as follows

40-44 10863 registered athletes
45-49 4899
50-54 2319
55-59 1130
60+ 420

As the age range increases the number of competitors decreases quickly. If they created a 70+ division where would be a grand total of 29 athletes this year. Only 20 completed the entire open.

I think that is way to small as pretty much every one who registered would be able to compete in the games.

As the sport grows they should continually look at adding or readjusting the divisions to reflect the demographics of it's competitors.

Keep up the good work. Most 70 year olds are worrying about breaking a hip, not PRing a squat
