As an addendum to what Lincoln said... being an oly lifter, his muscle is built for functionality...had he built his muscle in a body building fashion I'd be more worried about rhabdo...as most believe that that kind of muscle would break down easier when thrown into a metcon.

Amazing, although I bet that is a lot of stress to put on one's body in one day, elite athlete or not.

Next challenge: Linda or Fran.

um, i don't think that the term "functionality" is applicable here. The only difference between an oly lifter's muscle and a body builder's muscle is their force production capacity, single effort power output, and ability to work in different rep ranges. there's no "functionality" attribute to a muscle.

you might say that his ability to produce force is more functional to general sports application, or that his CNS is better adapted to coordinated full-body movement.

The skeletal muscle is the same, but I don't think it breaks down the same when you go from a bodybuilder isolating to get hypertrophy to create HUGE biceps, then to the guy using his whole body to clean and jerk...

LOOK, I've never ran an experiment, nor can I quote any data (I don't think any exists)...maybe "most" was too ambitious...

But, I'll leave it here since everyone needs a thesis:

IMHE, rhabdo seems to happen to guys from BB backgrounds who hit WODs hard for an extended period for the first time. Maybe it's just ego and going too hard too early, or maybe it's the extra muscle baggage...or maybe a combination.

Are you referring to someone(s) you know in particular, or is this just a general theory you have?

Re: Donny Shankle did "Grace" in 1:47

Brandon pointed something out to me in a private conversation, which is that no one is sure what the risk factors are for rhabdo. The fact is that even elite athletes can get minor cases of rhabdo...so we can't be sure that even crossfit can prevent rhabdo.
